MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL GAME PARK

Nestled in Eastern Uganda, Mount Elgon National Park derives its name from Mount Elgon that stands at altitude 4321m. The park sits 1121sq.kms of land and hosts diversity of wildlife such as bush bucks, buffaloes, forest elephants, 300 bird species including the alpine chat, hunters Cisticola, black collared Apalis, marsh widow bird, Jackson’s francolin, white starred forest robin and many more. 

This extinct volcano is one of Uganda’s oldest physical features, first erupting around 24 million years ago.

Mount Elgon once featured as Africa’s highest mountain exceeding the Kilimanjaro’s current 5895 meters however, due to erosion, it reduced to 4321 meters making it the 4th highest peak in East Africa and 8th in Africa. Like other parks, Mount Elgon National Park is surrounded by local communities and most importantly, 2 tribes; the Bagisu and Sabiny as well as the marginalized Ndorobos who lived deep in the forest of Benet. Mount Elgon is 4000sq.kms which makes it the largest volcanic base in the world.

Mt Elgon is one of the oldest physical features that is found in uganda. The mountain is belived to have erupted over 24 million years ago. The mount was once the highest in Africa more than the current Mt Kilimanjaro which stands at 5895 meters (19,341 ft) above sea level.

Mt Elgon has been affected by severe soil erosion over decades of years ago reducing its height to 4321 meters. The mountain now stands as the 4th highest mountain in East Africa after Mt Kilimanjaro of Tanzania,Mt kenya of kenya and Mt Rwenzori of Uganda.

The mountain is ranked the 8th highest on the African continent.

Elgon has the largest volcanic base in the world. Located on the Uganda-Kenya border it is also the oldest and largest solitary, volcanic mountain in East Africa. Its vast form, 80km in diameter, rises more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains.

Mount Elgon National Park is a national park 140 kilometres (87 mi) northeast of Lake Victoria. The park covers an area of 1,279 square kilometres (494 sq mi) and is bisected by the border of Kenya and Uganda. The Ugandan part of the park covers 1,110 km2 (430 sq mi) while the Kenyan part covers 169 km2 (65 sq mi).

Mountain Elgon park entrance fees are 35USD for foreigner non-resident, 25USD for foreigner residents, and 15,000UGX for East African citizens but per person
